Megarob, finalist in “Best research program for Industry 4.0″

On April 6th, Megarob was designated finalist during the Gala of the „Advanced Factories” Fair, “Best research program for Industry 4.0″ category, in Barcelona.

International fair on innovation in machine tools, industrial automation and Industry 4.0, „Advanced Factories” brought together more than 8,000 professionals from 25 countries interested in optimizing production systems and machinery to develop the factories of the future.

As a parallel activity of „Advanced Factories”, the Factory of the Future Awards give prizes in recognition to the work developed by companies and teams that already lead the revolution 4.0 in the industry. The awards have 4 categories: Best industry in the use of digital technologies for their production, Innovative technology for the Factory of the Future, Best innovation program Industry 4.0 and Best case of talent and development of skills adapted to the advanced factories.

Megarob, an R&D project coordinated by Aitiip Technological Center and with the participation of 7 partners – (Acciona, Grúas GH, Leica and CSEM (Switzerland), Teamnet (Romania) and Espace2001 (Luxembourg) -, is a new manufacturing system based on state-of-the-art industrial robotics whose precision and large dimensions, on which it works make it the only one in the world.

This robot is assembled on a crane through which it moves, encompassing a large workspace of 20x6x5 meters. The operations are controlled by a program, which uses a positioning algorithm programmed in the project environment, and processes the readings of a laser device at the rate of 1000 readings per second.

The manufacturing operations that can be performed by this system are diverse, such as drilling, milling, grinding, sanding or polishing among others. These operations are performed on large pieces, over 10 meters, another of the specific features of this platform.

This project, funded by the 7th Framework Program of the European Union with more than 4 million euros, was developed during 36 months.
